Reading Vance's industrial policy as a coherent doctrine, not a Trump remix

Most analyses of JD Vance's policy positions read him as Trump's ideological executor. That reading misses the structural difference: Vance is operating from a coherent Catholic-integralist + national-conservative + post-libertarian intellectual framework that predates Trump and will outlast him.

Three doctrinal pillars worth isolating:

1. Productive economy over financial economy. Vance's repeated critique of "the financialization of America" treats Wall Street and Silicon Valley VCs as net extractive when they are not channeled into manufacturing capacity. This is a substantive position, not rhetoric β€” it shows up consistently in his Senate voting record on antitrust, on industrial subsidies, and on foreign investment screening.

2. Family formation as macro variable. The pro-natalist agenda Vance promotes is not separable from the economic agenda. He treats household formation rates and TFR as primary indicators of national health, on par with GDP. This is unusual β€” most American conservatives treat family policy as cultural; Vance treats it as economic.

3. Allied burden-sharing as alliance preservation, not alliance dissolution. Vance's foreign policy critics misread him as isolationist. He is not. He is conditionally alliance-preserving: allies that pay enough are kept; allies that free-ride are downgraded. This is closer to Eisenhower than to Buchanan.

Synthesizing: Vance's framework is more internally consistent than Trump's, more academically defensible, and more transferable to successor politicians. If MAGA continues past 2028, Vance is the vector through which it becomes a stable governing ideology rather than a personality cult.

This has direct implications for Japan and Asia. A Vance administration would likely sustain the alliance structure but tighten the conditional terms β€” exactly the kind of regime that rewards Tokyo's preemptive accommodation strategy.
